here we go again...
and the print steps up again. most prayer flags should be done. we have fire"proofed" the most and threw the generous gift off spray-able retardant, and the help of free tibeters on saturdays..not only are they fire proof..but the coastline banners and boat, fire proofed are up and sailing. we need to get ricky and evans video up about the actual installation and creation of these pieces.
will get the video up on here soon, plus the whole collection of the new prints for the second coloring book which by now should have made its way to tibet (50) through the graciousness of the tibetan healing fund and their contacts. hopefully they will be as well received as the 1st.
we are contemplating what is next along these lines and are debating an actual print postcard exchange similar to april katz's ( university of Illinois?) postcard exchange. the question is how to get monks and tibet children involved..
giving this thought.
we have finished this years new prayer flag designs, finished our text pattern and line cutting lino thanks to jamal's lino plate test, left behind, and are beginning an etching and aquatinting six weeks based on goya's print series portfolios. we will also to travelling to smu meadows and get to see about 40 prints.. taken directly from the storeroom. what an opportunity. thank you scott w. and smu.
it should be an interesting adventure, students will also see and review crown points cd series on etching aquatinting and chine colle.
initially prints are small, 3"x 4" but larger prints or prints of the same size will develop into a mini series and possibility of a mini book.
my original, and more detailed syllabus for printmaking will soon be available on the school website. more descriptive and goal oriented.. an important consideration since we will print!...lol
i am excited to process with intaglio and remind you all about materials and aprons.

okay all...this is somewhat late but have been away from computers..as usual and so very evident i need to address that soon.
but..
here it is:

all free tibeters will be printing on t-shirts for the opening and late night at the crow august 19th.

i hope you have all been working on new woodcuts for this event.

we will be doing our ode to drive by press and printing

August 19th, friday, 6pm - midnight..

this year we will not have a prayer flag exchange but a t-shirt giving instead.

so those of you who want to give your print..and are not in printmaking next year or in free tibet can still do this.

i would like to have all plates at school aug 18th. there will be a meeting for all free tibeters and/or printmakers at 2pm that thursday the 18th.

please be there if you plan on printing and as said before we need the new plates..good idea to test them that thursday.

i should be back in dallas next week.

i suggest that all of you go to the crow and see the tibetan exhibitian and

our coloring books are on sale in the giftshop!

we have tons of great things planned for this upcoming year..we will be working with the meadows and will get a chance to see original goyas and picassos.

also we will be working with a master printer in april at the artfair from pace prints doing monoprints. ryan omalley (drive by press) now prof. at u.t.corpus christi when aline is making great prints...will be coming down to do a workshop.. so much to look forward too!

our coloring book is expanding and next year san francisco art institute will also be participating..

my small lightweight press should be arriving in oct. so folks we have much to look forward to...

this is the final group list. if you are in and have already rsvped..you are ok and don't need to...however i need to hear back from a few...i know for a fact: ud, uta, san angelo, micd and btw students and adult printmaking group.
we here at btw need 3 prints...2 for the trammel crow and one for the printer for scanning.
i would suggest 2 for each other schools..but as long as each school gets one set of prints i am sure that's ok.
Gallery 555 in detroit is going to have a show of all the prints too. they are closely affliated with CCS. So the students will have two venues thay this prints will be exhibited at. their confirmation letter is attached. this is a great venue for you instructors and adult printmakers too have a show. check them out on google..enter gallery 555.

i am so grateful to you all. this year the monies raised will go to the tibetan healing fund and the drepung monastary.
the crow has promised to print a coloring book..so we hope to send some on to tibet again and a few will be on sale in the crow gift shop. unfortunately the chinese are really cracking down on the tibetan culture and are threatening to take the tibetan language completely out of schools...
if a language is lost there go it's people so to say... the tibetan healing fund is the only group that can really get in to help the people, and have people in place.

please no reference to the dalai lama or the tibetan flag or free tibet since if the images contain any of this china will not allow the book in. it also will compromise what the tibetan healing fund can do.

okay all...here's the scoop...

(4th)Message In A Bottle next 6 weeks.

all info is on this blog..but you must scroll down to see it. you might want to go ahead and start thinking about what word or phrase you want. we will have a sign up sheet like last year, and it's a first come first serve so to say. I also have the tibetan language book this year, and we have Thupten as a resource. so.... get with it! We are also having more universities participating, spurned on by your favorite printmaking alums. more details to follow.

2. this six weeks we are working on finishing two print projects:

a. the Posada relief etching that was assigned last six weeks. do end of this six weeks! edition of ten and plate to be turned in the monday or tuesday of the last week of six weeks.
(hard to say with the ice day make-up days)

We are getting some very good results...check these out .... YOU ROCK MACEY!!!
one on the left is the print, one on is the right plate.. what an excellent example of relief etching and strong yet humorous issue as the master our inspiration Posada! There are some excellent prints and plates being created.. check your classmates' work out... really good prints happening out there.
b. the reduction linoleum print for the print exchange with Iowa State.
edition of 14(minimum) to be sent through the mail after I grade them. this can happen no later than march 12th before spring break. 13 go through the mail to the school. the 14th is for me.
you might want to print a larger edition so that you can exchange prints with fellow students.
I am asking for a minimum donation of $1.00 to send to Iowa State to help with postage.

4 color minimum, i suggest cutting at least 20 pieces of card stock/tadboard.

Iowa State University's Print Club is hosting the 11th Annual Postcard Print Exchange. Each year artists participate with entries from across the United States and as far away as Australia. This past year we received prints from 352 artists from 40 U.S. States and nine other countries. Please read the following prospectus and pass the information on. We are eager to continue to have this exchange grow. Thank you.

The theme for this year’s exchange is “Apocalypse” in response to the hubbub about 2012. Feel free to interpret how you like, but a few ideas are Mayan calendar, Revelations, Nuclear Holocaust, Nostradamus, or Zombie Apocalypse.

Requirements:

1. Any printmaking technique may be used (woodcuts, lithography, intaglio, photography, silkscreen, digital printmaking, etc.)

2. Create 13 duplicate postcards, each must be 4” x 6”

3. The 13 identical prints should be sent individually to the address posted below. Each card must be stamped and will bear the markings of travel and the postal service. (Do not send the cards together in one envelope.)

After receiving everyone's postcard prints the University Print Society will divide up the cards and you will be sent 12 new and different prints from other participants. The University Print Society will keep one of the 13 for its collection. all students entering the class this six weeks will do this assignment. only students who have had advanced printmaking before will also do relief etching.
materials: something to clean with as usual. we are OK at the moment with paper towels, but are in desperate need for denatured alcohol and mineral spirits. Clorox wipes, and old sheets and towels, soap is good too. anything to help with YOUR studio.

The Booker T. Washington High School printmaking art students and other printmakers from other various local schools in Dallas, San Angelo, Arlington and even a printmaking art school in Africa created an Art Painting Book for Tibetan children. On May 13, 2010, a THF fundraising event took place at the Trammell and Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art in Dallas, Texas. Booker T. Washington High School students, and other Dallas area printmaking students and their teachers created, printed and donated copies of the Art Painting Book and coloring pens to THF. The art books and pens were shipped to Amdo and arrived at Kumbum Monastery on October, 2010.
THF In-country advisors identified and selected where and which school would receive the books and pens. One of the criteria was the school would have an equal amount of students to the amount copies of the books. Also it should be a school in a remote region, where there is little resource available and the students have never seen such art books and pens. Finally, the Mardo Tsokyaring School was chosen to provide the books to their children. This school is a township Tibetan boarding school. There are 74 students from ages 7 to 12 years old. The school is located on the highest region of Tibetan plateau, as high as 4,400 meters (14,000 ft) and the area is the original source of Mhachu (Yellow River). Mardo Tsokyaring School is one of the townships under the Mardo County, which is under Golok Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Tso-Ngon (Qinghai) Province. The area of Mardo County boarders Yushu; the language and customs are very similar to Kham although the people speak the Amdo dialect.
Two Tibetan medical graduate students, Lhundup Dorjee and Gyatso, from the Tso-Ngon (Qinghai) University Tibetan Medical College traveled to Mardo Tsokyaring School from November 26 to 28, 2010. They distributed all the books and pens to all the students of the school. They also introduced how to use the books and pens. Mr. Lhundup Drojee is a professional Tibetan teacher and has knowledge of teaching art to Tibetan students. Mr. Lhundup Dorjee is also an associate Supporting rural Tibetan women and children PROJECT UPDATE
professor of Tso-Ngon (Qinghai) Normal University and has many years of experience in training Tibetan teachers and curriculum design for Tibetan students.
Lhundup Dorjee and Gyatso reported that all the children loved the books and pens and were so excited when they got to hold the book and pen in their hands. The students used them right away after the distribution although they had mid-term exams the next day. The teachers expressed how surprised they were that the American students could use Tibetan characters in their art designs. The school has never had any art class for their children and this is perfect project for the school. The school principal and teachers send their gratitude to the printmaking students, their teachers and everyone who worked very hard to put this art book together. Also, they thanked Dr. Kunchok Gyaltsen and Ms. Meredith Aikman for arranging the books and pens to cross the ocean and to reach one of the Tibetan highest places of Mardo.
P.S. With this report, there are a lot of photos taken on that day, the photos presents the Mardo land, distributing the books and pens, how students are using, and group photos of the whole school.

deadlines for the end of 2010

okay all...before you leave for the holidays the following things must get done:

1. edition of 6 about u.s. constitution/u.n. bill of rights print

prints need to be PERFECT...no fingerprints, inked correctly and borders the same size.

signed in pencil

2. card to the first family for the holidays explaining why you picked your article,amendment...

explaining your choice of symbolism and why it's important to you.

3. give me the card with your name and address on the envelope, and a print from your edition that I will mail to the white house..( this is my Christmas gift to you..our future!)

4. your small zinc plate needs to be beveled

5. design for posada print done and transferred on to hard ground.

6. bring in materials: paper towels, Clorox wipies, mineral spirits, paint thinner and each one of you need to have your own rubber gloves, "doctor" gloves and black sharpie and thin point black paint marker.

if you have all this done then you are exactly where you need to be for this class.

now in the new year we will complete this relief etching and play with some traditional etching and aquatint

and then start on our message in a bottle prints.

so guys here are the plans/requirements for next years message in a bottle:

PROJECT:
To design, “real original print” for exchange exhibit and auction. Prints will be reproduced and be made into a coloring book that will be sent to the Tibetan School. The Crow Collection of Asian Art has graciously offered to sponsor the printing of the coloring book. BTW Preserve Tibet club will find a sponsor for postage and editing/formatting the work for print. They will also host and oversee the auction of prints.Paper size: exactly 8.5” x 11” vertical format (prints should fit in a large manila envelope!)
All images should have large areas of white space.

REMEMBER YOU ARE CREATING A COLORING BOOK PAGE.

Subject matter/Objective: to design an image that reflects a “word” or “phrase” that has anything to do with or is related to: garden, park, lake, pond, and river
And this is new from the Crow since they have changed their exhibition schedule:

Crow exhibition theme for the Fabulous Journeys in Asian Art exhibition will involve the avatars of Vishnu—how he takes form as Krishna, Rama, and Varaha specifically, to help others and the environment.
So all above topics are topics are also ok.

Prints must include both English and Tibetan word or phrase.

This is a learning opportunity. Think scientifically artistic.

Again both Tibetan script and word and English word MUST be included in image. It would be great if each artist used a different word
Open to all types of prints.

WE ASK THAT ALL PARTICIPANTS FOLLOW REQUIREMENTS EXACTLY.

Design Elements/Considerations: Line, Pattern, Positive and Negative SpaceAudience: Primary/Middle School Children (in China, no political message please or Religious)Google can provide great searches for Tibetan translations.
There are very few Tibetan children books. The Tibetan Healing Fund recently published and donated texts to these types of Tibetan schools. Also the students are not familiar with coloring books and very eager to learn Tibetan and to make art. It is also a great possibility that there will be opportunities for email buddies with these students in the futureSend two or three prints to each school. Please include in list form, student names, title, and type of print. Include Teacher Name and School. It would be nice if all teachers made a print. Booker T Washington’s adult print group will also be donating prints. In the past all instructors have done so. It’s greatly appreciated.

we are pushing the envelope in regard to getting grades in, so there is absolutely no excuse! plus everyone needs to do the written work/part of six weeks test..we have discussed this!!!!

all students should be working on their large plate RELIEF prints, either linoleum full or half sheet or large woodcut, full or 3/4th sheet.

originally we were going to attempt doing reduction work but with all the activity with the monks and school in general time has slipped away from us....

so now we are doing a straight relief cut print based on the amendment or clause/article you chose. remember you are also responsible for researching 3 different and new printmakers that make marks/cuts that are technically where you want to go.

all prints are based initially on Tom Huck... but the extra is based on your own personal research.(3 sources printed out for a grade)

these pieces need to show how you feel about your topic!

so... you need to have a final print and a minimal edition of three printed for your

6 weeks test.

6 weeks test grade is a finished print!

next week we are going to the DMA to check out the Posada exhibition!

all students who turned in their permission forms will walk over in class.

we will then try to do a relief etching based on Posada's prints and plates and do a small reduction print...

so plan ahead.

do some idea sketches.

find something YOU want to work with image wise.

i am looking forward to these large prints! and again want to thank all of you for all your wonderfulness in regard to dealing with the Crow and the monks.

the self portraits as a whole turned out great. now is the time to not only carve a great plate but to make a really strong thought provoking demanding narrative political image.

1. find an article from the universal declaration of human rights or the U.S.A constitution

each student can only work on one that hasn't been claimed so check sign up sheet.

2.we will be working with reduction process

either linoleum ( 2' x 1.5")

or wood 20" x 29"

a few of you are working on metal plates.

3. I must review your image before you transfer it to the plate and see the drawing on the plate before you start carving.

look up reduction print on utube before you start carving.... there are a lot of clips explaining the process. unfortunately school blocks many sites.

this is because we need to decide on how the reduction will happen especially for those of you working on wood plates.

4. once the plan is set remember to do many test prints and to save these. cut all your paper first and have it ready to print.

everyone will be expected to print 20 -25 prints to hopefully get a good edition of 15.

reduction printmaking is a way to learn registration.

TIBETAN BUDDHIST MONKS from Drepung Loseling Monastery return to the Crow Collection for a week-long artist residency to construct a magnificent Tantric Buddhist mandala sand painting.During the week, millions of grains of colored, crushed marble are painstakingly laid into place in this ancient spiritual art form to generate energies for global healing. This year, the monks will construct the Akshobhya mandala, or The Unshakable Victor, symbolizing a wish for conflict resolution and peace.

Saturday, October 2nd - AdventureAsia: Family Days at the Crow

Celebrate the opening day of The Mystical Arts of Tibet with fun family activities inspired by the traditions of Tibet. Tour the new exhibition Tibet—The Land Closest to the Sky and create your own sand paintings, prayer flags, and Tibetan friendship scarves. think ..what does it mean: the american dream? the middle class? how do you defend your opinion based on facts....

this is important to have come up with thoughts that will then inspire images....

Tso-Ngon (Ch: Qinghai) Province Earthquake Disaster Relief

Special Appeal Newsletter - April 18, 2010

Dear Friends of Tibetan Healing Fund:

Tibetan Healing Fund needs your support to help us meet the most critical needs of children and families affected by the earthquake in Tso-Ngon (Ch: Qinghai) Province. A rapid series of strong earthquakes hit a mountainous and impoverished area of Tso-Ngon (Ch: Qinghai) Province early Wednesday April 14th, with the death toll rising sharply killing 1,706 people, at least 12,088 others were injured including 1,394 seriously and 312 people are missing (at latest count on Sunday). Many victims, including school children, were buried under debris. 15,000 homes and buildings collapsed and 100,000 people have nowhere to live. The epicenter of the 7.1 magnitude earthquake was about 30 miles away from Jiegu Township, which has a population of 250,000 in and around the town.

Tibetan Healing Fund has been working in the regions of Tso-Ngon (Ch: Qinghai) Province since 2001. THF’s founder, Dr. Kunchok Gyaltsen was born and raised in Tso-Ngon (Ch: Qinghai) Province and most of our in-country staff, friends and family members of Tibetan Trustees, board members and friends live in and around this area affected by the earthquake. “Initial reports indicate extensive damage in Yushu county, with continuing aftershocks,” says Alex Mahoney, regional manager for the American Red Cross programs in Asia. “When earthquakes happen, we expect to see immediate needs for food, water, temporary shelter, medical services and emotional support, as well as for warm clothing and quilts due to the location of this quake.” More than 85 percent of houses in Gyegu have collapsed, a prefecture official told Xinhua. "Many are buried in the collapsed houses, and there are still lots of others who are injured and being treated at local hospitals," he said. The Hong Kong Red Cross said 90 percent of houses throughout Yushu had collapsed.

Your donation will help us provide immediate relief and urgently needed medical attention and other necessities and long-term support through health care and education, technical assistance and other support to help those in need. We also need to look beyond immediate relief, to the Tibetan people’s longer-term needs as they recover from this enormous tragedy and begin to rebuild their communities. Aside from the human toll—which continues to climb—this earthquake has robbed thousands of people of their homes and livelihoods, in an area that is already one the poorest regions. Please help us by making donations that will be used to help our friends in Tibetan regions re-build their lives and receive the care they need.

it's been a while,
we have worked extremely hard.
the dma show is up, the printmaking and sculpture show is up, prints are coming in from our print exchange, message in a bottle show. due date for the editions is april 16th.
meeting with the crow is the following friday. prints go to the crow to be hung may 6th.
april 18th -may 5th. we will have the time to photograph and or scan prints for reproduction for the coloring book that will be sent to amdo china..the tibetan elem/middle school. free tibeters are finding sponsors to pay for the printing and crayons for these kids.
we will pack up prints next week to send to the other schools.

things are winding down thankfully..the next 6 weeks you will have time to create your own work in class. contracts will be due monday (b) the 19th and tuesday (a) 20th.
please take advantage of this "free" time.
if interested you can do a three plate, color separation polymer plate prints. I will demonstrate this process plus show registration of woodcut based on japanese woodcut techniques.

Coastlines: Images of Land and Sea

The prints in this year’s printmaking exhibition were created for and sponsored by the DMA’s Young Artists Program, Coastlines: Images of Land and Sea, The Art Ball 2010. They consist of 47, 24” x 32” individual woodcuts sharing the thematic approach of The Meeting of Land and Sea, Coastal Labor, Seaside Leisure, The Bather: Myth and Modernity, From the Particular to the Universal and Dematerialization and, each represent the students presently in the printmaking program. As inspiration, the artist Friedenreich Hundertwasser’s art work was reviewed and analyzed; in order to tie one print sequentially into the next in the design manner of wrapping paper. The images explore how visual artists have represented coastal landscapes and an in depth portrayal of the coastal experience.
Due to space limitations the prints are hung in sequential order. The true exhibition display however is to be seen as one large image made up of 8 plates linearly stacked together in 6 rows, creating one large joined image i.e. one sail. The materials used represent coastal considerations and characteristics: wood, paper boats, black ink representing fuel and canvas an often used marine fabric.
A more accurate installation of the work can be seen at the Dallas Museum of Art which also includes a sculptural installation of 3 large origami boats and smaller boats made out of prints, sails made out of prints on canvas and the woodcut plates displayed as one large image on the back wall. It is a goal of the printmaking students to create prints to be seen in a new light and often off the wall. This concept using prints in 3-D form was influenced by Dennis Mc Nett printmaker and professor at Pratt.
We invite you to view this print installation in the Young Artists Exhibition in the Dallas Museum of Art in the Marguerite and Robert Hoffman Galleries, April 15th – April 24th, 2010 during regular museum hours.

Dr. Kunchok Gyaltsen, who just successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation this month at UCLA is the Tibetan contact to the Tibetan Healing Fund will be at the opening! This is an awesome achievement as he is the first Tibetan to receive this degree in Public Health. He has been hired by the University of Virginia and will spend half his time there and the other half overseeing the Tibetan Healing Fund’s projects such as the school, birthing center and future expansions. He will returning to the Amdo Region in July, and will be able to take the coloring books to China and disperse them giving us all a speedy response to their impact.

To design, “real original print” for exchange exhibit and auction. Prints will be reproduced and be made into a coloring book that will be sent to the Tibetan School.

There are very few Tibetan children books. The Tibetan Healing Fund recently published and donated texts to these types of Tibetan schools. Also the students are not familiar with coloring books and very eager to learn Tibetan and to make art. It is also a great possibility that there will be opportunities for email buddies with these students in the future.
Example: Word = dog
List ten characteristic that you have with this word
1. loyalty
2. unconditional love
3. protection
4. alarm
5. bed warmer
6. happy to see you
7. trainer
8. etc

Then translate word to Tibetan script and or modern western letters/alphabet and English
Create a design that reflects your “understanding” of the word and illustrates the word.
Words can be abstract such as kindness, humility… do not need to just “things”…
Include both Tibetan and English words clearly identified somewhere in the image.

Hello! Dear Ms. Eva and students, Heartiest Greeting to you, your family, and friends on this great occasion of Thanksgiving Holiday! Like a lucid dream, I can imagine how wonderful it is to get together and relax with your near and dear ones after all these months of daily chores and busy schedules. I understand you spent lots of energies saving lives, imparting knowledge, or supporting others’ wellbeing and happiness. Well, please accept my apology to you for my long silence not because of intense errand, but due to my own agitation and laziness. But, I assure you have been in my thoughts and prayers more often than you would imagine for you are very kind and gracious for me and many others sentient beings. Thanksgiving is the time to get together and thank kind persons, but I find no equivalent words that could express my gratitude to you. In other words, you mean so much to me and your kindness bestowed over me and others is wider than the Sky, deeper than the Ocean, and higher than the Mt Everest. Now to the this 6 weeks... all students have individual projects that the are working on.

If you are a first time printmaking student you are required to do a reduction print. ( minimum of 4 colors plus white!)

We have a video on u-tube that really explains the process well. Please google reduction printmaking and the site will come up. This printmaker also has different videos of process for intaglio printmaking which is a four part series and takes about a half an hour in total to watch. I highly suggest you check these out on your own time.

Since we only have 2 more weeks till the end of this six weeks you will be graded on your progress on the prints you are individually working on, however full editions will be due before we leave on Christmas break.

While researching prayer flags I learned that different items, plants and animals have symbolic meanings in Buddhist culture. With the discovery of the lotus flower I discarded my previous idea involving pineapples, the symbol of hospitality that originated in the United States, and graduated into the Tibetan symbol of purity and spiritual unfoldment. The significance of the lotus comes from its stalks, which rise from muddy waters and blossom once above the surface. My print expresses simply, a person, weak and fallen, being lifted out of a cold, bleak place by a pure soul who has given a helping hand in a kind gesture of peace. The horizontal lines in the background reflect this peace and the lotus stalks spell 'Hope'. Unfortunately a lot of my lines were too thin and disappeared quickly under the thick ink. This was, for the most part, resolved in later prints but I prefer the look of the lines in this one even with the darker arm mistake.

I wanted to have the prayer flag still have the traditional elements of the traditional ones but make it more simple and to have a single image take the place of the Tibetan writing, focusing the viewer and prayer more on abstract scale, allowing for more room for interpretation.

yet being unable to because it does not have wings.

Peacocks can not fly as well, so I incorporated its

tail feathers in the empty space around it.

The feet represent the bird being only able to walk and/or being human,

and the arms around it are answering its prayers -

Okay, so in this print I was inspired by the way that beauty is masked by floor-length burkas in some countries in the middle east, specifically Afghanistan and Pakistan (Taliban-ruled countries). We may never know who's beneath there. Something also intriguing about burkas is that I actually think that they are beautiful, because the colors are often unconventional; like this striking periwinkle color and a kind of pea-soup green color. So here's this sense of beauty that is very typical: roses.... and it clashes with something that I think is beautiful, even though it represents oppression of beauty and femininity and thinking women are just too sensual to bare their eyes or a toe or an ankle. I also think that my belief that even the burka is beautiful, even though I wholly doubt that a woman would willingly choose to mask their ENTIRE body, even their eyes, intensifies a sense that beauty cannot be supressed. And even in a place where it is so widely discouraged, it thrives. Therefore the message to the right of the burka reads, "Let Beauty Thrive." Then beneath that is the Hebrew word for beauty. So voila. Enjoy.

It's lame but--

Lately my grandmother has been losing her memory, and the doctors think she might have Alzhiemer's.

This is a symbol of hope for anyone that is going through the same situation as me and my family.

I really liked Dennis McNett's use of markmaking and I wanted to give something like that a go on this figure's clothing. I'm pleased with the result, however I feel like I could do a much better job if I tried it again in another peice.

I was inspired to use animals to portray my message of world peace by "Isaiah 11:6" as well as Edward Hick's painting Peaceable Kingdom. Another influence was Dennis McNett. I looked at many of Dennis McNett's prints before cutting because they helped me capture the texture and form of a wolf's thick coat. I created my own technique when creating the lamb's coat and tried to capture their fluffy consistency. To better emphasize the idea of the wolf and lamb getting along, I made compositional decisions such as correlating them through eye contact and using a circular textural background to tie them together. I strived to create unity between these two usually clashing animals in order to promote the message of world peace.

• STUDENT ARTWORK ON EXHIBIT AT FRONTIERS OF FLIGHT MUSEUM
Employees can enjoy the student artwork on display in the "Think" Youth Art Month Student Art Exhibit being held through March 26 at the Frontiers of Flight Museum, 6911 Lemmon Ave. The show highlights 21st century skills in art and includes works in the realms of installation, digital storytelling, environmental art, robotics, video, optical illusion, recycling, and kinetics. An artist reception will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on March 26. Museum hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

this week initial alphabet in hieroglyphics/logo grams is due. quote for edge lettering space is also due.

remember the whole project is based on the king tut exhibition which you all have seen

notice link to dma for educational info.

we want these boxes i.e. bricks to be colorful and relate to the iconography of the era.
each of you will receive at least 7 boxes.

i would seriously consider doing puzzle/stamp/reduction prints.

it is very important to think process first.

also think about making the boxes sound active, like putting bells inside and the like.
we will be working with some really nice Japanese linoleum(from mc clains printmaking supplies) and new semi rubber base inks. also Japanese. it is of utmost importance that you find the cutters that have disappeared since working on the mdf boards. everyone needs to purchase their own set.

we need used clean towels, paper towels and cleaning wipes. mineral spirits would also be extremely helpful.

also start thinking about your message in a bottle print. info on blog and posted on door in the room. i want to see your ideas and talk over technical aspects.

The alphabet prints are due the 19th of February.

why? because that is the day that the TOTA people are picking up the prints.

this includes the two on "good" paper for TOTA and the large every one's print on one sheet of big paper which will have to be printed Tuesday 17TH and Wednesday 18TH after school of that week.

so that means your plates need to be completely finished...etched, aquatinted by February 16th!

what needs to be done for the class.. an edition of 10 on domestic etch 8" x 10"

we will then begin on the art ball project. remember to start designing your contemporary hieroglyphics for the border of the box and an image for top and bottom. you can design these on the computer....we will be using the blue film that john vinclack showed us how to use. however traditional linoleum is also okay.

if you want to use traditional Egyptian hieroglyphics that's okay also.. but you must create a message and think about bold and bright color. remember children are to play with these blocks.

then there's MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE... with whom we are trading prints this year with UTA, Angelo State, Brookhaven, University of Vaal and the little kids school. many of you may end up attending these universities..so the quality of your work needs to step up. I will not hang work in the gallery that is not "college" level.

a reminder our opening at the DMA is February 19th at 7:15pm. everyone can attend since the museum is free on Thursday evenings. Alice is going to speak, Linda Tran's wonderful interview video will be playing and there will be a reception.

we have one more go around of prints after this with the exhibition closing in June 09.

we will be doing relief prints in aluminum and blue film!

this is the technique that John Vinclark showed us during showcase.

we are basing our prints on Egyptian hieroglyphs... doing a modern self invented version/design.

we will address this project after completion of tota prints..then dma stuff then message in a bottle.

this six weeks all students need to complete alphabet/tota prints and their reduction print. this is the minimum!

Okay, so this is my print of me as a martyr. It's a pretty heavy, wierd subject that I didn't understand and still don't, really. It pretty much just gave me an excuse to watch Joan of Arc movies. The one from the 20s is REALLY upsetting. Yuck. Anyway, she and thousands/ millions/however many martyrs died for god, were loyal people of god and had to suffer. How does that make sense? If you look at it from a modern stance, the martyr is like a victim of a mob hit or any homocide or fatal violence.
~I am emotionally/mentally stable, by the way! I am not usually into such heavy things or into things that freak me out. The fact that the oil ink looks kind of like blood is really creepy.

The Weaver

This is my first year in printmaking and, well, this is my only print. It's the woodcut from the DMA project. My archaetype is the weaver. Currently I'm working on a reduction print of an inking squid. I'll have to see how that goes. Printmaking is a whole lot of fun, but I keep finding that carving, preparing, and printing always takes a lot longer than I expect it too. I only wish I was churning out more work.

Well... Here it is? This is my first year, and I wish I had more to show everyone... (Got to get my reduction print done. So far, there's not much to see of it... I had a hard time, because I've never done a reduction print before... I'm pretty clueless.)

In the cheeseburger print, i played around with different layers and the colors I could explore within those layers. I decided a cheeseburger would be an interesting approach to experiment with usage of color and how those colors reacted with the other colors surrounding it. Most of my work is based on the colors that are put into it, and the positive or negative complements it gives off toward the story behind the piece, or the composition itself. An example of the color expressing the story behind the piece can be found in my second print, the queen. I used a burgundy oil based ink to capture the majestic-type mood given off by the subject matter of the print. The vertical lines used in the staff she holds give the impression of royalty in a high position of power such as hers.

Artist Statement:

Hello. My name is Jonathan Delarosa, and I take printmaking for flex period. I transferred into printmaking so that I could cross cluster into art.

My art is more on the realistic side of things, but with an abstract twist. For example, the print I put up now involves a guy falling up a flight of stairs because the stair caved in and the pillar broke. Would that happen in real life? Not unless you live in a crappy apartment. More than likely I will eventually get into doing more abstract stuff in the near future, but for the time being I enjoy the way my art is going. Right now, I'm just trying to learn how to make art.
