Printmaking Students and The Crow Collection of Asian Art
Benefactor: Drepung Loseling Monastery (Atlanta, GA
www.drepung.org ) and the Tibetan Healing Fund (primary school Amdo Region www.tibetanhealingfund.org ) all gifts are given in the names of all schools participating and all monies and sales are dealt with by The Crow Collection. No commission is kept and no one profits individually.
Tibetan Chinese monks from the Monastery in the Amdo Region will also donate 10 woodcuts to this exhibition. Dr. Kunchok Gyaltsen, who just successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation this month at UCLA is the Tibetan contact to the Tibetan Healing Fund will be at the opening! This is an awesome achievement as he is the first Tibetan to receive this degree in Public Health. He has been hired by the University of Virginia and will spend half his time there and the other half overseeing the Tibetan Healing Fund’s projects such as the school, birthing center and future expansions. He will returning to the Amdo Region in July, and will be able to take the coloring books to China and disperse them giving us all a speedy response to their impact.

To design, “real original print” for exchange exhibit and auction. Prints will be reproduced and be made into a coloring book that will be sent to the Tibetan School.
BTW preserve Tibet club will find a sponsor for this part of the project.
Paper size: 8.5” x 11” vertical
Open to all types of prints
Design Elements/Considerations: Line, Pattern, Positive and Negative Space
Audience: Primary/Middle School Children ( in China, no political message please or Religious )
Objective: to design an image that reflects a “word”
Both Tibetan script and word and English word MUST be included in image.
It would be great if each artist used a different word.
Google can provide great searches for Tibetan translations. Here are just a few links we have found so far.

There are very few Tibetan children books. The Tibetan Healing Fund recently published and donated texts to these types of Tibetan schools. Also the students are not familiar with coloring books and very eager to learn Tibetan and to make art. It is also a great possibility that there will be opportunities for email buddies with these students in the future.
Example: Word = dog
List ten characteristic that you have with this word
1. loyalty
2. unconditional love
3. protection
4. alarm
5. bed warmer
6. happy to see you
7. trainer
8. etc
Then translate word to Tibetan script and or modern western letters/alphabet and English
Create a design that reflects your “understanding” of the word and illustrates the word.
Words can be abstract such as kindness, humility… do not need to just “things”…
Include both Tibetan and English words clearly identified somewhere in the image.
YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO PRINT AN EDITION OF 15-17 DEPENDING ON HOW MANY SCHOOLS WILL PARTICIPATE.
