Booker T. Washington Installation at the Dallas Museum of Art
November 21, 2008 – May 31, 2009
The Dallas Museum of Art invited community partner Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (BTWHSPVA) to contribute an installation to the Center for Creative Connections, a new multi-generational education space. Printmaking students from BTWHSPVA studied the work of artist Janine Antoni who created Lick and Lather, a sculpture featured in the Center’s Materials and Meanings exhibition. Exploring ideas about the self and identity—ideas similar to what Antoni explores in her work—each student then created self-portrait prints based on archetypes using medium-density fiberboard (MDF), steel, plastic, and fabric. www.DallasMuseumofArt.org

time is moving quickly, it is time to focus and get things done.

due dates are the 14th and 15th of December. TWO CRITIQUES ARE DUE ALSO!!!

now as usual our pace increases.

after winter break this is our agenda.
these are the projects we need to tackle in this order:

1. give away print for tota. (small etching?)

2. art ball. ( possibility of relief Egyptian text....relief print or silkscreen maybe using blue iron paper and etching deep on aluminum plates.)

3. message in a bottle (check specifics of proposal)

4. statement print(open... multi plate suggested)
and

5.where to have outside print exhibition with reception?
6.?

I would like to thank all of you for the success of the beginning or stage I of the DMA exhibition.

"WOW!"

What a wonderfully talented group of strong minded creative individuals you all are. You make your teacher proud.(an understatement!) I can't wait to see the next batch and the new "interview" video. You go girl...Miss Linda Tran and thank you.

Is anyone willing to go over to the DMA and interview and film people in the space? We were invited to do this.... or take still photos? maybe on a late thursday night or on a sat. or sun. afternoon. you can borrow my still or video camera if you like...
extra credit points?

I will post the video link for the interview for the Trammell Crow video as soon as the final version is out. Taylani and Alice were our spokespersons and did an outstanding job.

please think about or better yet DO check out: www.inkteraction.ning.com Then if you can please look at Jan Jordaan and Aine Scannell 's sites... very good work and thoughts. the new edition of the AFT newsletter i.e remember it's over the Internet.. and we have been featured in this newsletter.........there are some very interesting things going on.

patiently waiting to see......

well, the DMA project now just needs to be installed. the reception date is still not a 100 % set date, but as soon as I know I will post the info.
we are going to do THE MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE event ..... print exchange, exhibition and sale.
we will start on this second semester immediately after finals. so i would start thinking about the messages you each individually want to send. remember it's an important decision, an opportunity to voice a message of meaning tied in with an image created for a cause.
( sounds awesome....)
i know Vaal technological university is participating for sure. i am hoping that brookhaven and uta will also. we are hoping that the elementary artists from the township outside of durban will also partake. the may be looking to us to help them fund their art 13 project which would also be a very worthy charity.
side note...remember all seniors and juniors to sign up for the 3 printmaking workshops November 20th and 21st. if you are planning on staying in the area, brookhaven, uta and university of Dallas have the strongest print programs it seems. twu has a great bookmaking and photo teacher. i believe printmaking professors from these schools will be reviewing portfolios these days also.

this Monday November 10th all students should be working on the plates of their new assignments! ( this is nothing new, i have individually reviewed and conferenced with all of you last week! no excuses!!!! )

2 new requirements for all printmakers beside intro students:
new writing assignment to begin this next 6 weeks. students will be expected to do two written reviews of prints from sites listed on this site. forms will be available in the classroom by the computer, and soon on this site as a download?! and all students will be required to upload their own prints at least once a semester.)

SO, HERE'S To YOUR OWN WORK!

ON TO YOUR OWN WORK!

Dear students,
We have completed the time allotment for the DMA project.
All plates and prints should be in their proper spots, identified with your first and last name, grade level and name of archetype.
Thursday and Friday and if need be Monday we will be scrubbing the studio down. All the presses, counters etc will be ink free when we are done....and then it's off to your own work.
ALL STUDENTS THAT ARE NEW TO PRINTMAKING(i.e. ONLY HAD INTRO TO STUDIO)
will be required to do a reduction print. size 12" x 12", minimum of 4 colors...preferably more.
ALL PRINTMAKERS SHOULD HAVE 3 IDEA SKETCHES FOR THEIR NEW PRINT.....MONDAY November 3rd OR TUESDAY November 4th.
P.S. THE WORK WILL BE INSTALLED THE 13TH OF NOVEMBER. WE WILL DELIVER IT NEXT WEEK MOST LIKELY FRIDAY.
AS FAR AS I KNOW THE RECEPTION IS
FRIDAY NOVEMBER 21ST. DETAILS TO FOLLOW

Assignments for rest of 2nd 6 weeks

ok! we are getting to the end of our part of this long and excellent DMA connections project.
by next Friday the hallowed HALLOWEEN, all plates need to be dry/ inked on color, all prints in the drawers of their destination, so that we can transport everything to the DMA.
IF YOUR PRINTS AND PLATES ARE NOT IN THE DESIGNATED SPOTS, THEN YOU ARE OUT OF THE EXHIBITION!
THE RECEPTION IS THE SECOND WEEK OF NOVEMBER , exact dates and time to follow.
special and heartfelt thanks to our filming crew. we will also want to present our DMA ladies and supporters with flowers the night of the reception...so just put that on the radar. we are very lucky that they support our program the way they do.( and it'd because of the continuous excellent work you students do!)
Now, in regard to assignments:
1. If this is your first time in printmaking since Intro to Studio, you are to do a reduction print, subject matter up to you, 12" x 12", minimum 4 colors... more is better... think of the puzzle print concept and the ability to individually do mini reductions in individual parts/sections/pieces.
2. Those of you who have been in printmaking need to come up with a design for what ever technique print you want to do by Monday/Tuesday Oct.27th/28th. If you want to medium size to large size intaglio prints then you need to purchase your own plates. There is a possibility that I am going to make an order to Graphic Chemical and you can join in. The price list is on the bulletin board.
Also spoke to Terri at Paper Arts. She is going to carry supplies.
http://www.paperarts.net/ ( we want to support her she's a master printer and has great free advice!) tel. 214- 828-9494
or you can go to: McMurray Metal Co., 3000 Elm Street, 75226, tel. 214- 742- 5654
( remember you need contact paper to put on one side of the plate if you are not buying back-coated zinc)
I think Asel's also has printmaking supplies.
Brand Sheet Metal is where I got the steel plates... 5119 Lawnview 75227, tel. 214- 388- 9819
I would call first and see if they are there. they have all metal too.
You need to start buying your own tools.... think about the tool w/ 3point tips from Home Depot
called " general marking tool set.. no.707088. a woodcut set would also be good. paper arts has some nice ones as do other places.
Today image wise I'm featuring Sean Morgan and Anna Laura Juarez. rock on!

beginning of images of student artists working

here rudy is working on the different plates for the dma project. he used softground, spit-bite and traditional etching techniques on his steel plate, reworking it at least three times, experimenting with intaglio techniques. his woodcut begins to show the evolution into the more "me" part of the three plate concept. presently he has started on the image for the more realistic image of the collagraph. his archetype is DEATH. the final images should be awesome. i look forward to seeing the final multi plate/layer prints!

you rock rudy!

alice has finished the almost final statement for the dma and busy filming interviews with the help of olivia and linda tran. you ladies rock too!

you all may think its a secret...but no..... you guys ROCK!

Ayyyy Ohhhh.

Okay, so if you guys haven't noticed/aren't in the fifth period printmaking class-
There have been some issues concerning uploading of student work to the printmaking blog, and now we have a solution!

This is actually a totally new blog, under the email btwprint@gmail.com.

If you want to post your work, etc. you can get the password to this account from Ms. Kutscheid, or most of the students in fifth period.

If you would like someone to upload your work for you, email it to kutscheid@gmail.com, btwprint@gmail.com, or LindaRoboTron@gmail.com (because I've got nothing better to do, obviously).

Umm so enjoy the new blog I guess!

-Linda and tons of other people, or something.

hmmm....

so we take out our umbrellas, raincoats and rubber boots.
as we're sitting in our homes, let us send positive thoughts, our messages of comfort and concern to all those immediately affected by ike.
eric avery has his studio in downtown galveston and a btw alumni, exceptional printmaker and now instructor in galveston, bobbie weiss and his family .. just two that immediately come to mind that hopefully are out of the area.
mother nature makes herself known again. what an archetypal image this could make.....
check out janine antoni's section on art 21. really focus on her comments on materials and their effect on art creation... she is the art connection/bridge to the installation at the dma. remember they are featuring her lather/chocolate self portrait busts and videos.
all of you need to be thinking about what you are planning on saying in your video segment.
your statement should have been influenced by ms antoni's concepts specifically dealing with material usage. again i suggest you start dialoguing and fine tuning your thoughts and statements.
MOST IMPORTANTLY THE CREATION OF YOUR IMAGERY!
CRITIQUE DATE>>> OCTOBER 1st and 2nd.
1 plate and 3 good prints.
students that began this project last year must have two plates (3 prints each plate)
QUESTION: how many of you want to have another message in a bottle exhibition and sale at the trammell crow again in the spring, making it an annual event? we could start the tradition of also including alumni in the exhibition. it could be a way of staying in touch. let me know.

Here's a state school with a real printmaking program

Check out this site. Eric Avery went to this school a long time ago however it is one of the few state schools where you can really learn how to be a "master printer" but I'm not so sure they have that certification. Check their printmaking faculty's work ..... look at where they went to school.. that always opens doors for different sites and options. The studio will be open to print this Saturday Sept. 13th from 12:30 to 2:30.

after thought.... an artist suggested to investigate by Pema the tibetan artist living in N.Y.

Check out the artist SWOON.
click on link.... look at some of the video interviews.
This is a total different direction, in regard to installation art and the power of print.
More powerful than slick and playful Red Grooms 3-D print installations.
Her cut lines are very confident and effective, could also be seen as non-destructive to property, a valid use of print media, that can be easily removed and saved.
Start thinking about making prints in this format and size.

another week ahead.

I went to Alex Hamrick's opening on Saturday and he had quite a few woodcuts that he had done in Boston on display. Very nice work, loose graphic and delicate jabs that were impressive. However most exciting were his series of playful and very well drawn figure studies on brown paper lunch sacks that lined the wall. These were both elegant and humorous.
I suggest that all should make an effort to see the show. it runs through October 11th.
Brooke Berman gallery,
170B Leslie street
Dallas, TX 75207
tel. 214 827 7211
There is also a wonderful print exhibit at Brookhaven College that opened Friday. The printmaking instructors from both Baylor University and Washington University. On Sept. 11th there will be an evening lecture by David Newman, one of Brookhaven's printmaking professors. Don't forget the printmaking show at the Bathhouse Cultural Art Center and the free workshops in encaustic techniques on the 13th. There are many print related things going on, so take time to enjoy some of them.
PLEASE GO TO CROWN POINTS LINK !!!! great new show and images of many famous contemporary prints. This was just posted as of last week, so the images are fresh.
In regard to class... we must step forward and start getting focused regardless of all the setbacks especially of the first few weeks. There is so much talent and skill that all you printmakers have and you need to share this by making art, PRINTS! ....so get to it NOW plz!!!!!!
Lets get some images up, too.

bathhouse cultural print show

dear all,
i just wanted to thank all of you who came to the opening. your support really means a great deal to me. it's quite an honor to have students and parents... friends and the like make time to come see the work and say hello. so once again thank you! i hope you liked the work. the encaustic show also has some very interesting pieces. i just loved the little pony on roller wheels in the corner....
so what did you think?

well...it's almost the first day of another exciting year

dear all..
just as everyone needs to learn about our sight/site, i need to remember to keep it up. as you all know this kind of stuff is new to me.
anyhow.... most importantly, we have had numerous calls about what we are doing for the dma project and two people will be visiting on thursday to see what we have so far... so when i say we need to step on it, it is no joke.
this last friday the printmaking room, with the help of mr bell and the night custodians, joel from ap art office, finally got put back into some form of working order. as you will all see promises of correcting the room never happened but we do have what we need to now start making prints and will wing it like we always do. all of you is what makes that room such a wonderful creative place, so i know we will have a good year.
i have a few links that i need to put up but i'll leave that for next time...
and yes...we want prints up so that we can make comments.
so folks.. the 2008-2009 school year begins today!
should we say hurray?

welcome........

Hello and welcome.
A new year and a new era...
Thanks to Ms Jalilvand we now have a blog. This is the 21st century after all!
I look forward to creative exchange and a wonderfully productive upcoming year.
We have much to accomplish... great things ahead coming up quickly...
so let's get to it!
ms kutscheid
